Macroevolutionary insights into sedges ( Carex : Cyperaceae): The effects of rapid chromosome number evolution on lineage diversification

چکیده

Changes in holocentric chromosome number due to fission and fusion have direct immediate effects on genome structure recombination rates. These, turn, may influence ecology evolutionary trajectories profoundly. Sedges of the genus Carex (Cyperaceae) comprise ca. 2000 species with chromosomes. The exhibits a phenomenal range (2n = 10 − 132) almost not polyploidy. In this study, we integrated most comprehensive cytogenetic phylogenetic data for sedges associated climatic morphological investigate hypothesis that high rates are selected when innovation is required, using evolution as proxy rate. We evaluated Ornstein–Uhlenbeck models infer shifts equilibrium selective regime. also tested relationship between diversification Our analyses demonstrate significant correlations morphology niche Carex. Nevertheless, amount chromosomal variation able explain very small. recognized large mean number, but significantly lower morphology. detected peak near intermediate combination, these point toward importance history work suggests effect rates, just reproductive isolation, be central sedges.

Nonuniform processes of chromosome evolution in sedges (Carex: Cyperaceae).

Holocentric chromosomes-chromosomes that lack localized centromeres-occur in numerous unrelated clades of insects, flatworms, and angiosperms. Chromosome number changes in such organisms often result from fission and fusion events rather than polyploidy. In this study, I test the hypothesis that chromosome number evolves according to a uniform process in Carex section Ovales (Cyperaceae), the l...

REZNICEK, A. A. 1990. Evolution in sedges (Carex, Cyperaceae). Can. J. Bot. 68: 1409-1432. Carex is the largest and most widespread genus of Cyperaceae, but evolutionary relationships within it are poorly understood. Subgenus Primocarex was generally thought to be artificial and derived from diverse multispicate species. Relationships of rachilla-bearing species of subgenus Primocarex, however,...

Karyotype stability and predictors of chromosome number variation in sedges: a study in Carex section Spirostachyae (Cyperaceae).

Previous work on holocentric chromosomes in the angiosperm genus Carex demonstrates that many of the traditional sections are marked by different ranges of chromosome number, suggesting phylogenetic autocorrelation. It has been hypothesized that shifting constraints on chromosome rearrangements may limit the potential for hybridization among lineages, promoting speciation. In this study, we eva...
